[attr="class","wsh2"]The Concept Threnodies is aimed to focus on the grittier side of the world of Thedas – the plotting, the battles, the looming threats and personal conflicts. It is surviving in an unpredictable world in disorder, where a character’s choices can make them, or break them. [break][break] Action and consequence are an integral part of our board. We aim to offer the same dynamic flow of possibilities as the games do, where our writer’s actions will have a real effect on how the story progresses. Our goal is to offer a unique way to experience the written world of Thedas, and an opportunity to shape it’s future. |
the inquisition is over |
The year is 9:57 Dragon, 13 years after the events of the Exalted Council where a heavy hearted Inquisitor announced they would put away their swords for good. Its soldiers relieved of duty, its inner circle parting, it seemed ‘the Inquisition’ was now another closed chapter of history. [break][break] But no decision comes without consequence – the dispersal of the Inquisition left a power vacuum the size of which no one anticipated. The world was crumbling without the force that had influenced kings, stopped wars, and tied nations together. Countries trying to rebuild found themselves weakened without support, former allies found themselves without the resources that once gave them power, and the corrupt sought to take advantage, influencing darker agreements. Divine Victoria, formerly the Inquisition’s spymaster, has done her best to keep peace. But not even she can perform miracles. [break][break] Worse still was the Qunari threat: they have taken Seheron, and are relentlessly pushing Tevinter back, ever aimed for Minrathous. No one can be sure of their next target, but some even claim they have seen dreadnaughts patrolling the coasts as far south as the Waking Sea. The threat has become very real, adding to the tension of the times. [break][break] As if more problems were needed, the disappearance of the world’s elves can no longer go ignored. Where once people wondered the size of the Dread Wolf’s forces, now they fear. No one knows when – or if – he will strike, or who will be able to stop him when he does. [break][break] Thedas is in a state of unrest, desperate to find the same unity that had given them the strength to defeat Corypheus. Will they find it before it’s too late? Will the Inquisition be called on once more? Only time will tell… |
Maker of the World, forgive them |
[attr="class","wsh2"]Orlais Orlais’ initial resurgence in the years after the Inquisition has dwindled into a threat of financial collapse. The destruction caused by the War of the Lions and the destabilization caused by the War of the Elder One had effects for longer lasting than what was originally assessed. While palaces and buildings can be repaired in a few years, it takes substantially longer for the land to recover. With the freezing of Sarnia and devastation in the Dales by the undead and demons, Orlais has lost much of its production power. [break][break] Empress Celene has done her best to maintain order, her success much due to the efforts of Marquise Briala and her more esoteric connections. The proud empire has yet to have to turn to others for assistance, though if the years stretch on as unfruitful as they have been, Orlais will be facing new vulnerabilities. [break][break] [attr="class","wsh2"]Ferelden Ferelden has finally recovered from the Fifth Blight, many old farmlands fertile again and settlements rebuilt. Denerim has been restored to its original glory. Under the reign of the well-loved King Alistair Theirin, and with the help Bann Teagan Guerrin, Ferelden prospers. [break][break] Though not all is good in the kingdom. The Hinterlands have continued to prove troublesome, the years after the war allowing ample time for routes and hideaways to be established by people than a less than savory nature. Slavers are a rampant problem along this sections of the Kings Road, especially nearby the city of Redcliff – which is one of the few places still left reeling from the Corypheus crisis. [break][break] Perhaps the most pressing concern of the Ferelden monarchy is the age-old feud with Orlais bubbling up again. While the king and his closest advisors have no interest in more war, there are those in the court who would take advantage of Orlais’s weakened state. Subterfuge is extensive in the Ferelden court, and danger lies on the horizon for king and country if it is not addressed. [break][break] [attr="class","wsh2"]The Free Marches The city states of the Free Marches are all plagues with anxiety from the Qunari threat, especially as more rumors of sightings along the Waking Sea have surfaced. Many cities still feel the sting of the Qunari attacks from their past, and Marchers everywhere are fearful. Ostwick is reinforcing its walls, Starkhaven bolstering its troops – some may call it paranoia, but the Free Marches have felt the power of Qunari forces in the past, and intend to be as prepared as possible should the worst happen. [break][break] Kirkwall, still under the rule of Viscount Varric Tethras who has continued to keep his office due to overwhelming popular vote, is no different. But with the city still not fully recovered from the events of the Inquisition, plans have been difficult. However, the people of this city are some of the few who are confident, and between Varric and Guard Captain Aveline Vallen protecting their home, they have good reason to be. [break][break] [attr="class","wsh2"]The Tevinter Imperium Of all the countries in Thedas, it is Tevinter that is in the most danger. The Qunari have taken Seheron and have held it for the past two years, using its strategic position and their massive naval force to hammer the north-eastern coast of the Imperium. The Magisterium has banded together in unprecedented unification to stave off the attacks on the mainland and, hopefully, to regain a foothold on Seheron. [break][break] However their strategy, their chances seem bleak. The Qunari ever push towards Minrathous, and should the city fall, so will the Imperium. The followers of the Qun will then have a gateway to the rest of the world, bringing order with fire and sword. [break][break] The proud and independent Tevinter has few allies to call on for aid, but as time goes on, they may be forced to look to the south to help hold the line. Whether they will be given the assistance they need or their calls for help cast aside, no one can say. [break][break] [attr="class","wsh2"]All the rest With the shift of attention of the Grey Wardens, the blighted lands of the Anderfels have worsened dramatically. Many of the rural Anders who looked to the Wardens as their true authority have lost much of their self-sufficiency, while the capitol suffers a different turmoil. With the Warden’s political standing in the region, it has been rumored for years that the First Warden has eyes on the throne. Many in the order are skeptical, appalled that their work as Wardens is being ignored in favor of politics, causing infighting all across their ranks in Thedas. Without the diligence of the Wardens in the Anderfels, the darkspawn will flourish, and the south will face even another threat. [break][break] Nevarra has felt the push of the Qunari more than most, their borders being closely watched if the Imperium should fall. The rulership of the country has since passed into the hands of Ferdinand Pentaghast after the death of his brother, the late king Markus Pentaghast. While Ferdinand’s specialties do not lie in politics, his knowledge and skill with words has helped greatly in fostering good relations with their neighboring nations. If Nevarra must call for aid, they are almost certain to receive it. [break][break] Antiva has flourish during all the chaos – with supplies in such high demand from so many places, the country of trade has increased its profits tenfold, with the promise of more good fortune on the rise. With such profit in the country, it has made the merchant princes bolder, demanding more for less and, some say, scheming for sole takeover. This has made the Crows especially busy, taking contracts as they will. To this day, everyone in Antiva knows who the real power is. [break][break] Rivain has, miraculously, not seen an excess of change of the years. Their close ties with the Qun and general disinterest with the Chantry has not made them a large target – at least for now. While the adherence to the Qun has intensified (especially in the northern part of the peninsula), life for the Rivaini goes on as it always has. [break][break] [attr="class","wsh2"]Fade Rifts, the elves, and the Dread Wolf While the Breach was closed and many of the fade rifts in the south closed, others still remain, plaguing parts of the world with demons to this day. With the loss of the Inquisitors mark, there has been little success in closing them, though some magic has developed to at the very least lessen the tide. At this time, the presence of the rifts and demons has nearly become a widely accepted form of life. [break][break] What has been less accepted is the disappearance of the elves. While many years passed where the common citizenry were able to ignore the slow loss of the elven populace, now their presence has decreased to the point where it cannot help but be noticed. While elves have not become ‘rare’, they have become more highly prized: as they say, a trained elven servant is most desirable. This has, in some cases, benefited the elves, granting them higher wages and even being able to afford better homes. On the other hand, it has made them an even bigger target for slavers than they were before; a fact that has especially effected the wandering Dalish. [break][break] As for the Dread Wolf, he has all but disappeared. No one knows if or when he will strike, and by now few even believe he is still a threat. Those who do, however, are fearful of the power he will wield when that day comes. [break][break] [attr="class","wsh2"]The Inquisition With the Inquisition disbanded and its forces dispersed, it and any of its former members have been unable to make the types of significant changes to the world that they once could. There are rumors, of course, and as the political climate of Thedas darkens, more and more people have slowly begun to wonder: ‘Do we need the Inquisition?’ However, as things stand, it would appear the former Inquisitor and his advisors have given no indication of doing such a thing. [break][break] Not all is quiet with the former members, however. It is said that the Inquisitor has been known to locking himself in his study for days on end, or occasionally disappearing entirely. Some even reported spotting him in one place, with another report the next day halfway across the world. No one can say for sure if the rumors are true, or what they could mean. All that has been said by those closest to him is that, no matter what the world has done to him, there is no one who cares for it more. |
